What
Salieu Suso has been playing the kora longer than most of us have been alive. Born into a family of Griots or Jali, traditional musicians and historians from Gambia, West Africa, he was trained to play the kora by his father Alhaji Musa Makang Suso, a renowned kora player of that region and descendant of Jali Mady Wuleng Suso, the originator of the kora instrument. Salieu learned the kora while studying the genealogy and history of the Mandinka people. By the age of 15, Salieu had become a master. He has performed widely throughout the U.S., Africa and Europe, and is known for his diverse range of musical collaborations.
He was a regular performer at Bunna before covid, so we are happy to have him back again for this era!
A guitarist by trade, Baye Mahanta Diop is a performer, composer, and arranger, and one of Senegal’s most prominent musicians. With a mastery of Mbalakh folk music, jazz, fusion, afrobeat and styles from West and Central Africa, Diop’s style is that of the truly international modern musician. From Dakar, Diop has recorded and performed with renowned artists including Cheikh Ndiguel Lo, Manou Dibango, Papa Wemba, Angélique Kidjo, Tandishwa Mazouay and many others. He has prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, in festivals such as the New Orleans Jazz Festival and events in Detroit, Saint Louis, and at the GlobalFEST
Kolly Sumbundo rounds out the trio on bass.
Starts at 7:30, free with dinner. Everything is Eshi.
